We received over 35 amazing entries from architects from as far away as Turkey. We were overwhelmed by the volume and quality of the entries. These visionaries had found ways of transforming our wasted space in to everything from a high design museum foyer to an atrium-like outdoor classroom.
Almost every entry gave us an interesting feature which we will doubtless use somewhere, from a window wormery to developing world lighting technology (water filled plastic bottles in the roof to diffuse sunlight in).
In the end, the judges settled on the following shortlist:
Earth Timber Tins by Joel Cady, Nat Mosley, and Ali Shaw
By Jan Kattein Architects: Jan Kattein, Henrietta Watkins, Anna Mill and Tony Staples
Sill to Sill by Benedetta Rogers, Julian Bond, Lucy Paton, Sigrid Bylanders
Yellow Barn by Emil Eve Architects: David Eland, Ross Perkin and Emma Bush
And Framework by S/A/U/C/E : Pedro Filipe, Sanaa Shaikh, Andrew Tam, Helena Westerlind
And, although they didn’t make the shortlist we were very imrpessed by the Kyle Buchanan Partnership, who really investigated waste streams relevant to the farm. They realised that we are on a major bicycle route, have a bike mechanic on site (Bike Yard East), and are based in an area with at least 4 other bike shops within 500 meters. At the moment these bike shops have to pay for the removal of the tyres, and Celia at Bike Yard East got very excited by the prospect of her old tyres being reused in a building. So they get a Special Mention for Materials.
