Livestock Worker Opportunity
Hackney City Farm, located on a 2.5-acre site in London, has been serving the community since 1984 as a functional farm open six days a week with free public access. The organisation offers educational initiatives focusing on food production, farming and the wider environment.
We are seeking a qualified and experienced individual who aims to further develop their expertise in livestock management. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, capable of working independently, and will operate under the supervision of the Farmyard Manager.
Annual Salary: £26,436.80
Contract Duration: 18 months
Working Pattern: Monday to Friday; one weekend per month (with time off in lieu)
Working Hours: 9:00am–5:00pm including a 30 minute paid lunch break
Essential Criteria
Applicants must possess a Level 3 Animal Care Diploma (merit grade or higher) or an equivalent qualification, demonstrating a strong foundation in animal care. A minimum of one year’s direct experience with livestock in a farm setting is required. Candidates should evidence genuine enthusiasm and passion for city farm work, as well as the ability to engage and educate visitors effectively, fostering a welcoming
environment.
Key Responsibilities
The Livestock Worker will undertake the following core duties:
- Oversee daily farmyard operations, ensuring all routines are performed efficiently and to the highest standards.
- Manage site security and presentation when opening and closing the farm to visitors.
- Administer feeding schedules based on individual animal needs.
- Perform mucking out and maintain fresh bedding for all livestock.
- Supervise the yard during operational hours, ensuring the safety and welfare of both animals and visitors.
- Support volunteers and individuals undertaking work experience, providing guidance and assistance.
- Facilitate the movement of livestock from indoor enclosures to fields at the start and end of each day.
- Conduct daily health checks across all livestock species, monitoring for signs of illness or distress.
- Assist with key animal-related projects, including lambing, kidding, farrowing, foaling, and hatching, adhering to best practice protocols.
- Uphold the five freedoms of animal welfare at all times.
- Respond promptly to visitor enquiries, delivering accurate information and maintaining a friendly presence.
- Participate in the treatment of sick or injured animals under senior staff or veterinary direction.
- Carry out hoof trimming and picking to support animal comfort and mobility.
- Administer vaccines and medications as instructed, in compliance with relevant procedures.
- Maintain comprehensive records of animal movements, treatments, and health in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Desirable Attributes:
- Full driving licence
- Basic maintenance proficiency
- Prior experience leading corporate volunteering
- Experience conducting workshops and tours for school groups
