Animal handling

An introduction to Animal Handling

Here at Hackney City Farm we have a variety of animals suitably trained to be handled by children. This includes: chickens, ducks, sheep, goats and donkeys. During the workshop children will learn about each animal, their behaviour and lifestyle. Each student will have to opportunity to work one to one with the animals including close up contact and leading on halters. We can tailor each workshop to best suit a group.

Aimed at: 11-17 year olds.
When: Available Wednesday to Friday most weeks.
Workshop Duration: 1 Hour session with 15 minutes of preparation time.
Capacity: 12 students and 2 Adults.
Cost: £150 per workshop. Book 2 and get second for £120.00.
What to bring: Old clothes and Wellies.

We can support a range of needs and regularly work with vulnerable students, children on the autistic spectrum and students struggling in schools.

Aims of animal handling workshops

  • Support children through new situations and experiences when in and around the farm animals.
  • Promote positive behaviour towards people and animals.
  • Help children build self-esteem and motivation to learn through hands on sessions

Animal Handling workshop 1

A workshop aimed at one particular animal. Such as Goats, Sheep, chickens/Ducks and Donkeys. We will look at their diet, habitat, behaviour and in poultry their egg production. Each child will have the opportunity to handle the animal.

A workshop looking at all the animals we keep here on the Farm. We will look at their diet, habitat, behaviour and in poultry their egg production. Each child will have the opportunity to handle the animals.
